Effects of tidal flooding on estuarine biogeochemistry: Quantifying flood-driven nitrogen inputs in an urban, lower Chesapeake Bay sub-tributary

چکیده
Sea level rise has increased the frequency of tidal flooding even without accompanying precipitation in many coastal areas worldwide. As tide rises, inundates landscape, and then recedes, it can transport organic inorganic matter between terrestrial systems adjacent aquatic environments. However, chemical biological effects on urban estuarine remain poorly constrained. Here, we provide first extensive quantification floodwater nutrient concentrations during a event estimate nitrogen (N) loading to Lafayette River, an sub-tributary lower Chesapeake Bay (USA). To enable scale synoptic sampling necessary accomplish this, trained citizen-scientist volunteers collect 190 flood water samples perigean spring measure total dissolved N (TDN), (DIN) phosphate concentrations, Enterococcus abundance from retreating ebb while using phone application extent inundation. Almost 95% results had that exceeded standard established for recreational waters (104 MPN 100 mL−1). Floodwater were higher than measured natural waters, suggesting as source nutrients estuary. only DIN statistically Using hydrodynamic model calculate volume inundating differences median floodwaters estuary, 1,145 kg entered River this single, blue sky, event. This amount exceeds annual load allocation overland flow by federal regulations segment 30%. Because is projected increase future sea levels continue rise, crucial quantify order set realistic quality restoration targets tidally influenced bodies.

Detectability of Estuarine Fishes in a Beach Seine Survey of Tidal Tributaries of Lower Chesapeake Bay
Detectability, the probability of encountering a species at a sampling site, is often overlooked in fisheries research despite its potential to obscure inferences on habitat use and lead to biased estimates of abundance. We used occupancy models to explore factors affecting detectability and occupancy ( ), the probability that a species inhabits a site, for three fishes frequently captured in C...
متن کاملPhotobleaching of dissolved organic material from a tidal marsh-estuarine system of the Chesapeake Bay.
Wetlands and tidal marshes in the Rhode River estuary of the Chesapeake Bay act as important sources of dissolved organic carbon and strongly absorbing dissolved organic matter (DOM) for adjacent estuarine waters. The effects of solar exposure on the photochemical degradation of colored DOM (CDOM) were examined for material derived from different sources (estuarine and freshwater parts of the R...
متن کاملA mark-release experiment on saxat& in a Chesapeake Bay larval striped bass Morone tributary
A larval mark-recapture experiment was undertaken to compare dispersal patterns and vital rates of hatchery-produced and wild larvae. The potential of larval stocking to enhance recruitment in an estuarine tributary was also evaluated. Approximately 6.5 million striped bass Morone suxatilis larvae (5-7 mm, SL) were marked by immersion in 25 mg I ’ alizarin complexone, which was deposited in the...
متن کاملChesapeake Bay nitrogen fluxes derived from a land‐estuarine ocean biogeochemical modeling system: Model description, evaluation, and nitrogen budgets
The Chesapeake Bay plays an important role in transforming riverine nutrients before they are exported to the adjacent continental shelf. Although the mean nitrogen budget of the Chesapeake Bay has been previously estimated from observations, uncertainties associated with interannually varying hydrological conditions remain. In this study, a land-estuarine-ocean biogeochemical modeling system i...
